Why the right USB-C cable decides how your mining goes

It sounds trivial, but it is the most common setup problem with solo mining hardware: a USB-C plug does not automatically mean data transfer. Many of the cheap cables that come with phones, power banks or headphones are charge-only cables. They carry power but no data. Those cables are exactly why Nerdminers supposedly "do not work" or why firmware updates abort in the browser.

Which miner needs which cable?

Both BitMiner24 miners use a USB-C input. The difference is what comes in the box and what you use it for.

Nerdminer V2

No cable included. You need a USB-C data cable to connect the miner to a laptop, a power bank or a USB power adapter. It is required for setup and for flashing firmware.

NerdNOS

Cable and power supply are included. The bundled cable is enough for normal operation. A second cable is useful if you want to move the NerdNOS around or run firmware updates from a different computer.

Planning a firmware update? The browser-based firmware flash (AxeOS on the NerdNOS, NerdMiner_v2 on the V2) needs a genuine data cable, otherwise the browser will not see the device on the USB port. The cable above is tested for it. Everything about flashing is on the firmware update page.

Common questions about accessories

Can I use my old phone charging cable?

In most cases no. Many cables bundled with phones, power banks or headphones are charge-only. They carry power but no data. For solo mining and firmware updates the miner needs a real USB serial connection. If you are not sure whether your cable carries data, use ours. It is explicitly tested for it.

How long is the USB-C cable?

The cable is 1 metre long, enough for the usual desk setup (miner next to a laptop or power supply). If the distance between socket and miner is larger, we recommend planning for a short extension lead or a power strip.

Do I need the cable for flashing firmware as well?

Yes, and that is the most important use case. Our browser flasher (see the firmware update page) works over the Web Serial API, which means the miner has to be recognised as a USB serial device. With a charge-only cable the flash aborts at the device scan. Our data cable is explicitly tested for it.

The NerdNOS already comes with a cable, do I still need one?

For normal operation: no, the bundled cable is enough. A second cable becomes useful if you want to use the NerdNOS in different places (without replugging every time), run firmware updates from a separate laptop, or keep the original cable as a backup. The Nerdminer V2 comes with no cable in the box, so there it is essential.

Is the power delivery enough for both miners?

Yes. The cable supports up to 3 A at 5 V, more than twice what the NerdNOS draws at full load (~8 W) and far more than the Nerdminer V2 (under 1 watt). Voltage drop over the 1 metre run is minimal thanks to the full wiring.

Is the cable shielded?

Yes, the cable is electromagnetically shielded to avoid interference during USB serial communication. That matters particularly when flashing firmware or pulling pool data through the web UI, so no data packets are lost.

Which power supply should I use with the cable?

For the Nerdminer V2, any USB-C power supply with at least 5 V / 1 A will do (in practice any phone charger from the last 10 years). You can also simply run it from a laptop or a power bank. For the NerdNOS we include the matching power supply, which it needs for its roughly 8 W load.
