What is a NerdMiner V2?
The NerdMiner V2 is a compact USB-based bitcoin solo miner. It is built on the ESP32-S3 chip and lets you take part in the bitcoin network and join in on solo mining. At up to 250 KH/s and under 1 watt of power draw, it is the simplest and cheapest way into bitcoin mining.
How likely is it to find a block?
The NerdMiner V2 is a full bitcoin solo miner with a hash rate of typically 230 to 250 KH/s. Measured against the global bitcoin network hash rate (several hundred exahash per second, driven by industrial ASIC farms) that is a small amount of compute, so a block find is statistically rare and cannot be planned for.
That said, solo miners around the world find blocks regularly (in the documented solo pools on mempool.space, one every 2 to 3 weeks), and that is the difference to pool mining: you mine against the real bitcoin network, and if a find happens, the full block reward of 3.125 BTC is yours.
What hardware is the NerdMiner V2 based on?
The NerdMiner V2 is an open source firmware for bitcoin solo mining (GPL-3.0), not a hardware brand of its own. The firmware runs on an ESP32-S3 based microcontroller board, and we use the original LILYGO T-Display S3, made by the Taiwanese premium manufacturer LILYGO.
What you get from us is the fully configured complete package: LILYGO T-Display S3 hardware, the NerdMiner V2 firmware preinstalled (currently version 1.8.3) and a printed guide. Plug and play, no flashing needed.
Worth knowing: the device itself carries a "T-Display-S3" marking. That names the hardware manufacturer, it is not a different product. The name "NerdMiner V2" refers to the mining software running on it. The two belong together like a computer and its operating system.
What does the electricity cost?
The NerdMiner V2 draws under 1 watt, which at German electricity prices is less than 3 € a year in continuous operation. You can leave it running around the clock without a second thought.
Do I need a computer?
No. The NerdMiner is a standalone device. All you need is a USB power source (adapter, laptop port or power bank) and Wi-Fi. Initial setup takes 2 minutes in a browser on your phone, after which it runs entirely on its own.
What is solo mining?
Solo mining means going after a bitcoin block on your own, without joining a mining pool. The upside: if you find a block, the entire reward (3.125 BTC) is yours alone. The NerdMiner uses the public-pool.io server for solo mining.
How do I set up the NerdMiner?
The NerdMiner arrives preconfigured. Three steps: 1) connect the USB cable, 2) join the "NerdMinerV2" Wi-Fi from your phone and enter your bitcoin address and Wi-Fi details, 3) save, and you are done. A detailed guide is included and also available on our blog.
