What is the NerdNOS? The honest solo miner guide for the home

This article explains what the NerdNOS actually is, why it differs so clearly from the Nerdminer V2, what it can do, what it cannot do and who it is worth it for. Written from practice: measured, run, honest.

The idea behind it is simple. For years bitcoin mining meant noise, heat and expensive industrial hardware in a basement. The NerdNOS turns that around. A small device on a desk, one socket, your Wi-Fi, and you really are mining on the live bitcoin network. No large investment, no risk, no prior knowledge. That is precisely the point: mining you can touch, for anyone who wants to understand how it truly works.

What exactly does the NerdNOS do?

At its core the NerdNOS does exactly what an industrial Antminer S21 costing €3,500 does: it computes SHA-256 hashes and tries to find a bitcoin block. The only difference is scale. The Antminer S21 manages around 200 terahash per second (200 TH/s = 200,000 GH/s), the NerdNOS around 120 GH/s. That is a factor of roughly 1,700×, but technically the two work in the same way.

In practice the NerdNOS connects over Wi-Fi to a solo mining pool such as public-pool.io, receives current block header data and continuously tries to compute a valid hash. If it succeeds, statistically very rarely but realistically possible, the owner keeps the entire block reward, currently 3.125 BTC.

Against the Nerdminer V2 (250 kH/s), the NerdNOS has roughly 480,000 times the hash rate (120 GH/s divided by 250 kH/s). That does not suddenly make solo mining profitable, but the mathematical probability of finding a block rises by exactly that factor.

The hardware

The NerdNOS is built on a real bitcoin ASIC: Bitmain's BM1397. The chip was originally developed for industrial Antminer S17 units and has been running in the field, in the millions, for years. In the NerdNOS it sits on a compact board with its own power supply, a heatsink and an active fan. The key figures:

The NerdNOS firmware ships with a complete web dashboard: hash rate display, pool status, temperature, frequency tuning, BTC address configuration. You need no PC software at all, everything runs in your browser as soon as the NerdNOS is on your Wi-Fi.

Hash rate, watts, cost: the hard numbers

What makes the NerdNOS interesting is how it behaves in real operation. Here is the direct comparison with the neighbouring options for the home (electricity calculated at 30 cents/kWh, running 24/7):

That puts the NerdNOS in a gap that barely existed until now: real ASIC performance at living-room power draw and desk-level noise. It is not an industrial machine and not a money printer, but it makes solo mining at home technically serious.

Cooling, noise and heat in daily use

Unlike the silent Nerdminer V2, the NerdNOS has an active fan. Physics demands it: at 7 to 8 watts a BM1397 produces considerably more heat than a 1-watt microcontroller. The fan is audible but quiet, comparable to a laptop fan turning gently at idle. Not distracting on a desk, but not something we would recommend for a bedroom.

The heat stays manageable. In continuous operation the case gets hand-warm (around 40 to 45 °C), not hot. If you put the NerdNOS on furniture, allow some air circulation, so no closed drawer and no tight shelf. Beyond that, running it is straightforward: plug in the adapter, configure Wi-Fi, done.

What does it cost, and what comes on top?

That makes the NerdNOS one of the most attractively priced real ASIC solo miners for the home, cheaper than most BitAxe builds and with European logistics and support behind it.

What is the NerdNOS really about?

It will not make you rich, but that is not the point. You are putting real bitcoin mining on your desk: the real (small) chance at a whole block, a great deal to learn, and a device that plays along for you 24/7. The entire bitcoin network currently computes around 800 exahash per second, and your NerdNOS is a full participant in exactly that network. Small, but real.

And the chance is real, not zero. Every new block round, your NerdNOS takes part on equal terms, hash for hash, alongside the big farms. There are documented block finds on hobby hardware in the GH/s class. It happens. That tension is exactly the appeal.

What do I need besides the NerdNOS?

Before the NerdNOS can mine at all, you need a bitcoin address of your own, because that is where the block reward goes in the (rare) event of success. A SegWit address is recommended (it starts with bc1q…).

• A power socket. The USB-C adapter in the box is enough, and other chargers are not recommended (7 to 8 W needs a stable 5 V).
• A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Not 5 GHz only, the NerdNOS supports 2.4 GHz alone.
• A bitcoin address. SegWit (bc1q…) or legacy (1…/3…). Taproot (bc1p…) is not supported at the moment.
• Five minutes for the setup.
