There are three realistic scenarios for mobile Nerdminer operation:

  1. Travel and Vacation: You don't want to lose hash rate for 2 weeks because your home router rebooted. With the Nerdminer in your luggage, you can continue mining no matter where you are.
  2. Demonstration and Presentation: You want to show a friend or colleague how Bitcoin mining works. With a hotspot, you're ready to go anywhere in 3 minutes.

How Much Data Does Nerdminer V2 Consume?

A central question for mobile operation: Does the Nerdminer eat up my data allowance? The answer is surprisingly modest:

  • Stratum Protocol Traffic: ~1-2 KB per minute
  • Per Hour: ~60-120 KB
  • Per Day (24h): ~1.5-3 MB
  • Per Month (30 Days): ~45-90 MB

iOS (iPhone)

  1. Open Settings
  2. Personal Hotspot
  3. Activate "Allow Others to Join"
  4. Remember or change the Wi-Fi password
  5. Important: The iPhone hotspot name is by default "iPhone of [YOUR NAME]"

Attention iOS: From iOS 14+, the iPhone hotspot typically runs on 5 GHz if a newer model and compatible devices are detected. The Nerdminer then cannot connect. Solution: In the hotspot menu, activate the option "Maximize Compatibility" — this forces the hotspot to 2.4 GHz.

Android

  1. Open Settings
  2. Connections → Mobile Hotspot and Tethering → Mobile Hotspot (may vary depending on Android version)
  3. Activate Hotspot
  4. Check or adjust Name (SSID) and Password
  5. Important: Set "AP Band" or "Hotspot Frequency Band" to 2.4 GHz

On Samsung devices, you'll find the frequency band setting under "Configure Mobile Hotspot → Show → Bandwidth". On Google Pixel, it's under "AP Band".

Step 2: Connect Nerdminer V2 to the Hotspot

Once the hotspot is running (2.4 GHz!), Nerdminer configuration is standard:

  1. Turn on the Nerdminer and connect to the NerdMinerAP setup Wi-Fi (e.g., with a tablet)
  2. Open 192.168.4.1 in your browser
  3. Select the hotspot name from the Wi-Fi list
  4. Enter the hotspot password
  5. Bitcoin address and pool URL remain the same as at home
  6. Save, Nerdminer restarts

Within 1-2 minutes, the display will show the hash rate. As long as the hotspot is running, the Nerdminer will continue mining normally — as if it were connected to your home Wi-Fi.

Power Supply on the Go

The Nerdminer V2 draws about 1 watt, or roughly 200 mA at 5 V. This is trivial:

  • Power Bank: A 10,000 mAh power bank is sufficient for about 30-40 hours of Nerdminer operation
  • USB Power Adapter: Any standard smartphone charger is sufficient
  • Car USB Port: Works without problems, even in standby
  • USB Port on Laptop: Yes

Mobile Hotspot vs. Mobile MiFi Router

An alternative to a smartphone hotspot is a dedicated mobile internet router (e.g., Huawei E5577, TP-Link M7350). These small devices cost €30-80 and have the advantage of continuously broadcasting 2.4 GHz, without tying up your smartphone as a hotspot. You can also equip them with a SIM card of your choice, allowing for more flexible data plan management.

For occasional mobile Nerdminer operation, however, your smartphone is perfectly sufficient.

What to Consider for Mobile Mining

  • Mind Data Limit: Even if the Nerdminer uses little data, consumption can add up with very restrictive data plans or roaming limits.
  • Conserve Smartphone Battery: Hotspot usage significantly drains smartphone battery. Charge your smartphone simultaneously during extended mining operation.
  • Don't Block Hotspot Activity: Some iPhones automatically turn off the hotspot if there's no activity for a long time. This practically never happens with the Nerdminer due to continuous stratum traffic, but it's good to know.
  • Force 2.4 GHz: As described above — without explicit 2.4 GHz setting, the Nerdminer will not connect.
  • Backup Setup for Home Wi-Fi: When you return home after a trip, you'll need to reconfigure the Nerdminer because it only saves one Wi-Fi profile.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mobile Nerdminer Operation

Does Nerdminer V2 work in a 5G mobile network?

Indirectly, yes. The Nerdminer itself doesn't have a 5G modem — it connects via Wi-Fi to your smartphone hotspot. If your smartphone receives 5G and broadcasts a Wi-Fi hotspot, the Nerdminer mines normally. The 5G speed is transmitted to the Wi-Fi hotspot.

Can I operate the Nerdminer on an airplane?

No. Mobile data is prohibited on airplanes, and the Nerdminer requires an internet connection. The in-flight Wi-Fi usually doesn't work either, because it's either 5 GHz, paid, or protected by a captive portal (where the Nerdminer cannot fill out the login form).

Can I operate multiple Nerdminers on the same hotspot?

Yes, unlimited. Smartphones typically allow 5-10 simultaneous Wi-Fi clients, which is sufficient for multiple Nerdminers. Data consumption adds up accordingly (10 devices × 90 MB = 900 MB per month).

Which mobile plan is best?

Practically any. Even prepaid plans with 1-2 GB per month are sufficient. If you mine frequently on the go and don't want to constantly use your own smartphone data, a second SIM card (Aldi Talk, congstar, freenet) for €5-10 per month is worthwhile.

What happens if the hotspot connection briefly drops?

With firmware 1.8.3, the Nerdminer attempts 5 reconnects, then performs a hard reset. If the hotspot signal returns within this time, everything continues without intervention. For longer outages (e.g., in a tunnel), you must manually restart the Nerdminer once reception is back.
