The honest solo mining guide, from the V2 to the NerdNOS
At BitMiner24 we sell two solo bitcoin miners for the home: the Nerdminer V2, an ESP32 learning device at under 1 watt and 250 kH/s, and the NerdNOS, a real ASIC solo miner with a BM1397 chip at 80 to 120 GH/s and about 8 watts. Both take part in the real bitcoin network. Both are open source. Both fit in a living room. But they are built for different people.
All the guides come from practice. We measure power draw in 24-hour tests, check firmware updates before every release and collect owner reports from the community. No ad copy, no promises of returns, just honest numbers measured on a dining table in Stuttgart.

What exactly is the Nerdminer V2?
A USB-powered ESP32 mini bitcoin miner with a hash rate of about 78 kH/s and roughly 0.95 W of power draw. It is not a replacement for an ASIC miner but an educational and solo mining device. You get to know real blockchain mechanics and have a mathematically real, if very small, chance of finding a whole block.
What is the NerdNOS and who is it for?
The NerdNOS is a compact bitcoin solo miner with a real BM1397 ASIC chip, the same chip originally built into industrial Antminer S17 machines. It reaches roughly 80 to 120 GH/s at about 8 watts and is made for anyone who wants to take solo mining more seriously without putting an industrial Antminer in the basement. NerdNOS or Nerdminer V2, which one is for me?
The V2 is an ESP32 learning device at 250 kH/s and under 1 W: cheaper, silent, ideal for beginners and as a gift. The NerdNOS is a real ASIC solo miner at ~120 GH/s and 8 W, the next step for people moving up and for solo mining enthusiasts. How loud is the NerdNOS fan in everyday use?
Audible, but quiet, comparable to a laptop fan turning gently at idle. No problem on a desk, less advisable in a bedroom. The active fan is physically necessary because the BM1397 ASIC produces considerably more heat at 8 W than the silent V2 microcontroller.
How much electricity does the NerdNOS use per year?
At about 8 watts running continuously that is roughly 70 kWh a year, or about 22 € a year at German electricity prices (~30 ct/kWh). For comparison: the V2 costs under 3 €, an Antminer S21 more than 9,000 €. That puts the NerdNOS in a living-room-friendly class of real ASIC miners.
How long does setup take?
V2: about 3 minutes. Plug it in, join the configuration Wi-Fi, enter your bitcoin address. NerdNOS: about 5 minutes. Plug it in, join the setup Wi-Fi, then enter home Wi-Fi, pool and wallet in the web dashboard. Step by step: V2 setup | NerdNOS setup.
Can a mini miner really find a bitcoin block?
Yes, mathematically possible and statistically very rare. With the V2 (~250 kH/s) the probability is tiny; with the NerdNOS (~120 GH/s) it is roughly 480,000 times higher. Worldwide, more than 22 documented solo block finds by small hobby hardware were reported in 2024 and 2025. Solo mining is a lottery with a real draw: every hash is a ticket and the draw runs 24/7. Solo mining or pool mining, which makes more sense?
For both devices, solo without question. At the V2's low hash rate you practically never accumulate enough shares in a pool, and on the NerdNOS 120 GH/s is not enough for meaningful pool payouts, where pool fees usually take more than you earn. Solo is all or nothing, but the "all" is currently a block reward of around 3.125 BTC. Details in the solo vs pool guide.
Is bitcoin mining taxable in Germany?
Mining proceeds count as other income under § 22 EStG (German income tax act) in Germany. There is an exemption threshold of 256 € a year, and anything below that is tax free. For hobby operation with no intent to make a profit, the "Liebhaberei" (hobby activity) rules may also apply. This is not tax advice. If you are unsure, please ask a professional.
